How the scoring works

How do we score the loos?

Every accessible toilet is different, and we understand that no single facility can meet every possible need. To make our reviews as fair and consistent as possible, we’ve created a scoring chart in consultation with a representative from our local council’s access team. This gives us a clear, universal framework for assessing each toilet while recognising both strengths and areas for improvement.

Our scoring system

  1. Signage & Location

Is the toilet easy to find? Is the signage clear? 0 (poor) / 1 (good)

2. Transfer Accessibility

How easy is it to transfer to the toilet (left or right side)? 0/ 0.5 / 1

3. Grab Rails & Fixtures

Are rails, hooks, shelves, toilet roll dispensers and fittings in the right places and secure to use? 0/ 0.5 / 1

4. Red Cord Safety

Is there an emergency red cord, does it reach the floor, and is it untied? 0 / 1

5. Wheelchair Space

Is there enough room for a wheelchair turning circle and movement? Does it allow for easy support from a carer or assistant? 0/ 0.5/ 1

6. Lighting & Sensory

Are the lights suitable (not too dim or harsh), and is the space comfortable for those with sensory needs? 0 / 1

7. Visual Contrast

Is there a good colour contrast between walls, rails, toilet, and floor for easier visibility? 0 / 1

8. Hygiene

Is the space clean, tidy, and free from unpleasant odours? 0 / 0.5 /1

9. Baby Changing Approach

Is there a baby changing table or a suitable alternative for families and carers? 0 / 0.5 / 1

10. Toilet Height

Is the toilet at an appropriate height for transfers and comfort? 0 / 0.5 / 1

On certain elements we will allow for a 0.5 score as we appreciate the venue is doing everything they can to make their setting accessible but it just doesn’t quite fit our needs.

Total Score: /10

This keeps it really clear that each category is fairly considered, with room for half-points where toilets partly meet a need.

💡 Why We Score Toilets

As a couple living with accessibility challenges, we know how much difference a good toilet can make to a day out. Our scoring system is designed to share what really works (and what sometimes doesn’t) from our perspective. By being honest and consistent, we hope these reviews will help others feel more confident planning their trips — and maybe even encourage venues to make small changes that have a big impact.
